A Tory MP was laughed at over a Brexit comment and there are a lot of reasons why she was subjected to mockery.

On BBC News Politics Tory MP Laura Trott said that the CPTPP is a huge deal, post Brexit.

The government’s new flagship Brexit trade deal with Pacific countries will “not lead to substantial economic gains for the UK”, top trade experts have said, reported the Independent.

Pound

Also, the pound is on course for its longest stretch of daily falls since the start of the pandemic amid growing speculation in the currency markets that a weakening economy will limit further increases in UK interest rates.

Sterling is down a quarter of a cent today at $1.281, its lowest level in a fortnight.

EU trade falls

There is even more bad Brexit news as factories in England and Wales are seeing a downward trend in the share of their trade going to the EU.

Research by the business advisory firm BDO for Make UK indicated that a structural shift was hurting factories in north-west England and the West Midlands that had previously forged strong connections with firms inside the single market.

Verity Davidge, director of policy at Make UK, said: “Given the EU remains the most important market for manufacturers, efforts still need to be made to improve the existing agreement with the EU to reduce barriers to trade.

“However, UK trade patterns may be undergoing a gradual shift, with many companies continuing to look for opportunities in other markets. This has significant implications for export support and government policy must reflect this.”
