Rishi Sunak has launched his plan to tackle the UK’s ‘anti-maths mindset’, by forcing people to study Maths until the age of 18.

He wants all school pupils in England to study some maths until 18 – although it will not be compulsory to study the subject at A-level.

The PM has admitted there are not enough teachers to fulfil his plans to boost maths learning, as he failed to say when he will deliver his vision to get everyone studying the subject until adulthood.

Joke

He tweeted the plan and wrote: “We joke about not being able to do maths, but we’d never make a joke about not being able to read. Our plans today bring us one step closer to changing our anti-maths mindset and ensuring every young person has the skills needed for a successful future.”

Mr Sunak said teenagers will be made study maths in “some form” until 18 and said it must be “additional to other subjects, not instead of them”.

“Let me be absolutely clear: I am not saying that the answer is A-Level maths for everyone, but we do need to work out the maths our young people should study,” he said, adding that he wanted to challenge the “anti-maths mindset”.

When he mentioned it this morning literally nobody wanted to ask him a question about it!

Rishi Sunak can't get anyone to ask him a question about his maths announcement or an anything else. 🙈 pic.twitter.com/RFptHUosQ7

The fact that there are a million things in more urgent need of his attention doesn’t mean that Sunak is wrong about maths. And he probably doesn’t intend it this way but the greater a population’s numeracy, surely the lower their tolerance of financial equality.

For instance adults should be able to answer simple questions like:

"If you are thousands of maths teachers short of required numbers + you've cut real terms pay for 13 years + then you introduce a policy that requires thousands more maths teachers how likely is it to succeed?" pic.twitter.com/lVC3KzpqgE
