There is a way Labour can stop the government using Brexit to ignore environmental standards.
It comes as Southern Water spilt untreated wastewater and sewage into a river in the New Forest National Park.
Chris Packham shared a news clip and wrote: “You couldn’t make it up . . . and you don’t have to as Southern Water spill potentially 1.2 million litres of untreated wastewater and sewerage into a river in the New Forest National Park
“But don’t worry because they are ‘sorry’ . So are the fish , damselflies , kingfishers and otters . . .”
Also, Three major water companies illegally discharged sewage hundreds of times last year on days when it was not raining, the BBC reports.
The practice, known as “dry spilling”, is banned because it can lead to higher concentrations of sewage in waterways.
Thames, Wessex and Southern Water appear to have collectively released sewage in dry spills for 3,500 hours in 2022 – in breach of their permits.
Brexit environmental standards
But it is Michael Gove’s plans to rip up water pollution rules, which he sees as a Brexit ‘win,’ which could be stopped.
Builders have blamed the EU rules for exacerbating England’s housing crisis, but which environmental groups say are essential for protecting the country’s rivers.
So what can be done?
Filmmaker Peter Stefanovic explains in a new viral video how it could be stopped, to help protect our precious ecosystems.
Peter shared the video and wrote: “IMPORTANT! On Wednesday @UKLabour can STOP the Government using Brexit to flush away our environmental standards if @LabourLordsUK join Baroness Jenny Jones & others in rejecting amendments to the Levelling Up Bill outright – Let’s put party politics aside & do what’s right!”
