Money Rupert Murdoch putting aside to cover phone-hacking should be headline news

"Why do we still allow this non dom crook to disseminate his lies in this country and choose our prime ministers?"

Rupert Murdoch on settled the Dominion Voting Systems defamation case at a cost of $787.5 million.

According to early press reports, Fox won’t have to apologize or acknowledge wrongdoing in any fashion. Like the phone-hacking scandal, like the sexual harassment cases.

It’s clear Dominion’s lawyers would not have settled for a one-liner from the media mogul.

“The most humble day of my life” would not have been enough. It would have been hugely embarrassing, so like many times before, he opened his wallet.

Money talks so he didn’t have to.

Murdoch agreed a last-minute settlement, meaning Fox will pay Dominion $787.5m (£634m).

So the case never reached trial and the Murdochs never took the stand, but will they carry on, of course!

The company has a market cap of $17.3 billion.

Phone hacking

According to this week’s Private Eye, £23.7m was spent on legal fees related to phone hacking, and the eventual closure of the News of the World.

Also, the magazine claims that the Murdoch’s NGN is putting aside £128 million a year to covering the cost of phone-hacking cases, meaning losses by the Sun’s publisher doubled.

What drives Rupert Murdoch is not ideology, but a cool concern for the bottom line—and the belief that the media should be treated like any other business, not as a semi-sacred public trust, James Fallows notes in his 2003 profile: https://t.co/asPQq2CGWu
