JD Wetherspoons reported sales growth of 13.1 percent in the 25 weeks leading to January 22, a drop of 0.7 percent compared to pre-Covid levels for the same period.
It comes as the pub chain closed 10 pubs and have 35 more up for sale and owner Tim Martin is blaming Brexit? No, of course not, it was the Covid pandemic he thinks and unfair taxes.
In the annual report last year, Martin said: “During lockdown, dyed-in-the-wool pub-goers, many for the first time, filled their fridges with supermarket beer, and it has proved to be a momentous challenge to persuade them to return to the more salubrious environment of the saloon bar.”
However, he did also say that a decision was made to sell off the pubs due to rising food and energy costs and lack of staff.
Could that be Brexit? Well, he will never admit it.
With that in mind a Twitter users tweet has gone viral.
Then (2016) – “Brexit is ‘essential for humanity’s future'”
Now (2023) – “Wetherspoon’s is closing and selling of 39 pubs due to cost of rising food and energy costs and a lack of staff”
