The “Gremlins” film franchise is a series of two horror-comedy movies created by filmmaker Joe Dante and produced by Steven Spielberg. So where is Gremlins 3?
There have been rumours of a new film for years, but has there been any movement?
Well, it has been well over 30 years, and fans are still waiting for a new Gremlins movie after Gremlins 2 -The New Batch in 1990.
If you can remember 1990 (sadly I can) is was LONG time ago.
Surely we could have got the monsters on screen since then, it is not like there are any big acting egos or Gremlins working on other projects.
Jokes aside why is there no new film?
So what is going on?
Gremlins 3 finally actually has a fair chance to start production.
This is because of the thanks to the newly released Max animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.
Serving as a prequel to the 1984 film Gremlins and its 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, the series is set in 1920s Shanghai, and tells the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing met Gizmo, a young Mogwai.
In February 2020, Joe Dante, director of the original two films, revealed that he was acting as a consultant for the series.
On February 17, 2021, ahead of the series premiere, HBO Max renewed the series for a second season at the TCA virtual Press Tour.
Director Chris Columbus already has a script for Gremlins 3.
It seems rights issues (as ever) are one of the major issues holding back production.
In 2020 Collider reported Columbus said: “I would love to do it. I wrote a script, so there is an existing script. We’re working out some rights issues right now, so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be,” he said.
Gremlins actor Zach Galligan also told Entertainment Weekly in 2021 another Gremlins movie is “inevitable.”
Surely, there must be a market for fans of the first two films and a whole new batch (ignore the pun) of comedy horror fans who would love a new motion picture.
The first two films
Gremlins (1984): The original film follows a young man named Billy Peltzer who receives a mysterious and adorable creature called a Mogwai as a pet. However, he must follow three important rules: don’t expose the Mogwai to bright light, don’t get it wet, and never feed it after midnight. Of course, these rules are broken, and chaos ensues as the Mogwai multiply and turn into mischievous and destructive creatures known as gremlins.
Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990): The sequel takes the premise of the first film to new heights. It’s set in a skyscraper in New York City, where the mischievous creatures wreak havoc once again. This time, the variety of gremlins is expanded, showcasing different personalities and abilities. The sequel is known for its more comedic and self-aware tone, playing with the conventions of both horror and comedy genres.
